Internet Access Parent Policy
PARENT/ GUARDIAN POLICY FOR
MINOR CHILD’S FILTERED INTERNET ACCESS
Revised 3/14/2011
The library board supports the right of parents and guardians of minor children to determine what materials and electronic resources are appropriate for their children. Due to the proliferation of potentially harmful and age-inappropriate information available on the Internet that may be accessed inadvertently during routine Internet searches, the library board supports the use of a filtering utility on library computers. While filtering will block access to most potentially objectionable sites, it may not block all. Filtering may also block sites with useful educational and recreational information.
The Library staff does not monitor and has no control over materials accessed through the Internet. Parents and guardians of minor children are responsible for supervising their children’s use of Internet resources at the library, whether by making expectations clear to the child at home, or physically accompanying the child to the library.
If a minor requests access to a site that is blocked by our filtering software for research purposes, a library staff member may allow access to the site only after they have viewed the site (out of view of the minor) and determined that it does not contain unacceptable materials. A staff member or the minor’s parent or guardian will remain with the minor while the unblocked site is being viewed. Insufficient staffing resources may make it impossible for this service to be offered at times. Every attempt will be made by library staff to offer print and/or AV resources.
